When the time is right to sell your diamond jewelry, consider these 5 tips to help you achieve the maximum price for your precious items.

1. Know what you are selling

A good starting point is to have a basic understanding of what you are selling. If your diamond jewelry was recently purchased, a detailed description should be written on your invoice. For diamonds, there should be an indication of the carat weight (Ct), the colour (D to Z), the cut (Ideal to Poor) and the clarity (IF to I). Metal quality is expressed in karat (10K, 14K, 18K) and the weight in grams (G). Similar information can also be found on either a grading or classification report. Please click on the following link to learn How to Read and Understand Grading Reports.

Regardless of what documents you have on hand (if any), when selling your diamond jewelry at Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires Inc., a rigorous 10 Step Evaluation Process is done in front of you in the comfort of our highly secured downtown Montreal office. Using the latest gemological instruments, our experienced and trained diamond experts will help uncover any characteristics that might contribute to the resale value of your jewelry.

2. Set realistic expectations

If you recently purchased your diamond jewelry, you cannot expect to receive the same price you paid at a retail store. This is simply because a jewelry buyer needs to make a fair profit when selling it back in the market. The expert diamond and jewelry buyers at Laferriere & Brixi can help you achieve high market value for your diamond ring, bracelet or pendant.

The purchase price will vary if your diamond ring shows some wear & tear or if the diamond needs to be recut or repolished. Brand name jewelry from renowned designers like Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier or Bvlgari, tend to have higher resale prices than the intrinsic value of the individual stones or gold.

The value of some Estate jewelry or important vintage jewelry collections, might have gone up significantly over time. You can consult the experts at Laferriere & Brixi to have your jewelry re-appraised based on current market conditions.

Finally, the resale value of your diamond jewelry will generally not correspond to the amount stated on your Jewelry Appraisal Report. The purpose of this document is to provide a detailed description of your goods and a high retail replacement value for insurance purpose only. The stated amount does not necessarily reflect prevailing market prices.

3. Understand value drivers

The value of a diamond is based on the evaluation of four main criteria (the 4C’s): cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. These should be considered as “rarity factors” versus “beauty factors”. For example, the whiter your diamond, the rarer it is to find in nature, the more expensive it will be. The fewer inclusions it has, the rarer it is to find, the pricier it will be, etc.

To properly assess the 4C’s of your diamond, a professional jewelry buyer, will need to un-set your diamond from the mounting. It is only when assessing your diamond loose that a precise evaluation can be done. At Laferriere & Brixi, with your prior approval, we will remove the center stone in front of you to maximize your buyback value.

When your ring is only appraised mounted, the buyer will be taking on more risk and will therefore give out a lower price to protect himself from errors.

Considering all the different diamond shapes along with the 4C’s, it is estimated that there exist over 16,000 possible pricing combinations for diamonds! It is therefore important to rely on the good judgment of a professional diamond buyer to uncover all the characteristics of your diamond that may contribute to its resale value.

4. Find the right jewelry buyer

When searching for the right diamond jewelry buyer, here are a few factors to take into consideration:

Reputation

How long has the company been active in the jewelry industry, what are clients saying about them, are they involved and respected members of their community.

Professional Affiliations

Look for jewelry buyers that have extended and relevant professional affiliations in the diamond and jewelry sector. These companies will be subject to follow professional norms and regulations.

Complete and up-to-date gemological laboratory

It is important that your jewelry buyer uses the right professional gemological equipment to properly assess your diamond (ring, necklace, pendant). Ask about the gemological tools they are using and if they are capable of re-cutting or polishing your diamond if necessary.

Financial capacity and stability

Your jewelry buyer should be able to pay you in full immediately NO matter what the amount. Shy away from conditional offers or installment payments. A written and detailed contract for each transaction should be provided.

Extended network of affiliates

Reputable and established diamond jewelry buyers will have an extended network of affiliates in order maximize market reach and price. Look for buyers with global reach to attain the maximum potential price for your jewelry.

Learn more about the unique qualifications of Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires Inc. here.

5. Consider alternative options

When looking for potential jewelry buyers, you can consider the following alternatives to help achieve your objectives:

Family & Friends

Ask around the people close to you and that trust you. Some may be interested in buying your jewelry and offer you a good price for them.

Classified Ads

The big advantage is that you will be able to reach a larger pool of potential buyers. The major drawback is your security in having to deal with strangers for high valued items.

Consignment

A local jewelry store might be interested in taking your items on a consignment basis. You get paid an agreed upon price if they sell it. How long it will take and what the final negotiated selling price will be, remain open questions.

Auction Houses

Selling via an auction house has similar advantages and drawbacks as consignment. The final selling price is not certain and the commission fee to the auction house is usually high (15% to 30%).

A Recycled Diamond, an Ethical and Ecological Option

Consumers seeking to minimize the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions should consider recycled diamonds.

What is a recycled diamond?

A recycled diamond is a diamond that had a prior use and that is reintegrated in the supply chain. It can be a diamond that was part of an estate jewelry piece or set on a ring. The jewelry industry is unique in the sense that most of the material that was used in the manufacturing process can be re-used to make new jewelry items.

Why purchase a recycled diamond?

The most ecological diamond is the one that you don’t need to mine or make in a laboratory. It’s a decision that is part of a broader movement which encourages the development of sustainable and circular economies.

What about Lab-grown diamonds?

We do not encourage the purchase of laboratory grown diamond because unlike natural diamonds, they do not have any resale value (see article: Why laboratory-grown diamonds are such a bad investment). Furthermore, the manufacturing process of lab-grown requires the use of a significant amount of water and electricity from polluting sources. In fact, over 50% of the synthetic diamond productions comes from China.[1] The Chinese electrical production is generated at 65% by the combustion of charcoal[2]. Burning charcoal to create ‘fake’ diamonds is an environmental non-sense in our opinion.

How to choose a recycled diamond

The criteria’s used to purchase a recycle diamond are like the ones used for a recently mined diamond. The classification is based on the appraisal of 4 criteria’s namely, the weight, the clarity (purity), the cut and colour. These are obviously criteria’s use to establish rarity and not beauty.

Also, because recycled diamonds are often old, it is possible they were produced prior to the arrival of the modern brilliant cut which was established by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919.

Price comparison

The price between a recycled diamond and one which was recently mined should be relatively the same. It’s not because the diamond is old or was worn, that it’s less valuable. After all, diamonds are already over 1.5 billion years old on average. The purchasing price might be lowered if the diamond needs to be repolished or recut.

In the case of very ancient diamonds, that meet very strict cutting and symmetry standard’s, it is possible they can convey a premium price. This is the case for Old Miner or Old European cut diamonds.

In conclusion

A recycled diamond is an interesting alternative for those seeking to minimize the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions. It is a truly unique object that which can have a significant historical value. Recycled diamonds are not less expensive or of inferior quality. The experts at Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires can help assist you to purchase a recycled or old cut diamond. Do not hesitate to contact us for any further information www.lbdiamantaires.com

Investing in Diamonds

For centuries, diamonds have been considered a store of wealth and used to hedge against inflation. Natural diamonds maintain value over time even in uncertain economic times.

Start or complete your diamond collection

Diamonds are an alternative form of investment much like collectable cars, wine, or art. The long-term value appreciation being derived from its scarcity and increased gap between limited supply and increased demand. Although the overall macro-economic outlook is very attractive for diamonds, with limited new diamonds mines and increased demand from emerging markets,* the intrinsic nature of the market does not make it suitable for everyone.

First, diamonds come in many shapes, sizes, colors and degrees of quality. Since it is not a homogenous commodity, there is no spot pricing with a terminal market (like gold for example) which makes diamonds relatively illiquid. Because of this diversity, advisors need a certain amount of expertise to cherry pick the winners and asses which stone is more likely to increase in value.

Determining the right price to pay is also an issue before you decide to invest in diamonds. Stones are individually negotiated based on their specific attributes. Also, the further along the value chain (miners, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers) the higher the price paid. Finally, value appreciation does not necessarily happen overnight, and investors should expect to have to hold on to their assets from 5 to 7 years.

That being said, diamonds constitute a real tangible asset which offers evident benefits to its owners. It is the most concentrated form of storing wealth which can be easily transported in the event of an emergency. Prices are stable and have a low correlation to other traditional forms of investment. Diamonds can also be traded globally. When paper wealth and the stability of other traditional financial assets are perceived more fragile, investing in diamonds can represent a secure form of storing wealth.

Diversify your portfolio with a diamond fund

Laferrière & Brixi has been advising clients on investment diamonds for over 20 years. Clients can buy from existing stock or stones can be brokered based on specific requirements. Sourced from leading dealers, private collectors and manufacturers, stones are selected based on their rarity, superior make, attractive prices, and high expected value appreciation.

A Word on Diamond Shapes

Diamonds come in numerous shapes. There is no right or wrong choice, it is all about personal preference. For a manufacturer, the final shape is dictated by the form of the rough and the placement of the inclusions in the stone. Here is a description of the major shapes and their characteristics.

Round brilliant

The round brilliant shape is by far the most popular one and for very good reasons. First, from the manufacture’s perspective, it is the shape that sells for the highest price and that maximizes the yield of the rough. In fact, it is estimated that a brilliant of comparable size and quality will sell between 25% and 30% higher versus the other shapes. Also, the round brilliant enables the retention of 60% to 80% of the original weight of the rough diamond versus 40% à 50% for some other shapes.

It is the shape that gives out the most fire and scintillation

From the consumers vantage point, the symmetry of the facets and proportion of the forms, allows for the maximum reflection and dispersion of the light. For this reason, it is the shape that gives out the most fire and scintillation. The « modern » round brilliant is the version that was developed and perfected by Marcel Tolkowshy in 1919 and which has 58 facets. Finally, when comparing a round diamond with a square one of similar weight, the round always appears larger. This optical advantage is another undeniable benefit that contributes to its commercial success.

Princess

After the round, it is the Princess cut that is the most widespread. It is a square or slightly rectangular shape which generally has 76 facets. This is a great form for modern looking jewelry with well-defined straight lines. Since the table (the facet on the of the stone) is large, the inclusions are easier to spot. It is therefore preferable to choose a stone with a higher clarity grade.

Emerald

This cut was usually reserved for cutting the emerald stone, thus the origin of the name. It is a sober, very classical looking form reminiscent of the roaring twenties with typical art deco lines. It was often the preferred shape of Louis Cartier or Harry Winston for larger diamonds.

« When you look at the stone from the top, you see the appearance of parallel escalators going down deep into the stone. This triggers the desire to stare into the beauty of the diamond. » says Louis-Alexandre Laferrière.

In fact, it is the contour of an emerald diamond that inspired the logo of Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires Inc.

Oval

The oval shape shares many of the characteristics of the round brilliant but with a clear elongated central axis. One of its particularity, is that it exhibits a black reflection in the center of the stone which resembles that of a « bow tie ». For the stone to be desirable, the « bow tie » effect needs to be apparent but not overwhelming. The right visual balance will bear a significant impact on the price of the stone. The diamond experts at Laferrière & Brixi can help advise you to find the perfect oval shape diamond for you.

Pear

Diamond shapes follow trends and the pear shape his certainly the most popular one at this moment. As per the oval, the pear shape also produces a « bow tie » effect. It is therefore important that you be able to inspect the stone prior to its purchase and confirm its value. The pear shape is very dramatic and looks impressive for its weight. It is an ideal shape for a pendant or drop earrings.

Cushion

The cushion shape is also very much sought after. It is important to distinguish between the « cushion brilliant » and the other regular cushions. The « cushion brilliant » is a shape which is recognized by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). This cut shares similarities to the round brilliant but with a squarish contour.

Radiant

The radiant shape borrows numerous structural elements of the other diamond shapes. It is generally rectangular looking, with straight cut corners, a larger table on top and numerous facets on the bottom. The asymmetric arrangement of the facets gives it the appearance of broken or crushed ice. It is namely because of this asymmetry, that the radiant is often the shape of choice for cutting colored diamonds. More specifically, the asymmetry of the facets increases the color saturation in the stone.

New diamond shapes

Research and development for new diamond shapes is a never-ending endeavor. However, the main objective, is mostly concentrated on improving on the classic round brilliant shape to maximize light performance and increase scintillation. Numerous patents have been registered to that effect for round shapes that usually have a very high number of facets versus 58 on the original version.

Unfortunately, notwithstanding the claim of « increased performance », there exists many inconveniences to purchase new shape diamonds. First, because you are dealing with a patent, no manufacturer other than the patent holder can cut these shapes without prior authorization. This significantly reduces the distribution of these products to niche segments. Consequently, there is very little appetite for these diamonds on the secondary market and their value significantly lowered.

Fluorescence in Diamonds

By Louis-Alexandre Laferrière, Diamond Expert

Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires

INTRODUCTION

Fluorescence is a natural characteristic found in certain diamonds which emit a visible glow (generally blue) when exposed to ultra-violet light. It is estimated that between 25% and 30% of all diamonds will exhibit some fluorescence with 3% to 10% exhibiting strong fluorescence.

Fluorescence is used as an identification characteristic and not as a classification factor like colour, weight, cut or clarity. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) distinguishes between five levels of fluorescence for diamonds: none (i.e. no fluorescence), faint, medium, strong, and very strong. There is no relationship between the level of fluorescence and the level of clarity or colour of a diamond. It is therefore possible that two diamonds which exhibit different levels of colour and clarity, have a similar level of fluorescence. Even though blue is the predominant colour, diamonds can exhibit fluorescence in a variety of shades like yellow, green, orange, and white.

WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF FLUORESCENCE ON THE APPERENCE OF A DIAMOND

There is not a definitive answer or a clear consensus on that question. On one side, there is a common perception within the diamond industry that fluorescence can negatively impact the appearance of a diamond. In fact, many diamond dealers report that fluorescence can give a “milky” or “hazy” appearance which affects the clarity and brilliance of the stone.

This situation is perceived to be prevalent and negative for high colour graded diamonds (D,E,F,G) which exhibit medium to strong fluorescence. On the reverse, the presence of fluorescence is perceived to be positive for low colour diamonds (J,K,L,M) as fluorescence could help decrease the yellow tint and therefore increase the perceived colour.

Furthermore, numerous industry actors think fluorescence has no negative impact on the appearance of diamonds. To support their view, they point to numerous independent gemological studies by such laboratories as GIA and HRD, which have determined that fluorescence is not negative and can even be preferred by some consumers.

THE GEMOLOGICAL STUDIES

The two main studies which are usually cited on fluorescence are from the GIA “A Contribution To Understanding The Effect Of Blue Fluorescence On the Appearance of Diamonds” published in 1997 and from HRD Antwerp “The Effect of Fluorescence on the Colour of a Diamond” published in 2018.

In the first study, the GIA had diamonds exhibiting different levels of fluorescence observed under various lighting conditions, by a panel composed of professional members of the trade and consumers alike. The study concludes that for the average observer, there is no systemic visual impact of the presence of fluorescence. Furthermore, there was no consistence in the results observed amongst the industry experts. In the final analysis, the study concludes that, for most observers, there is no relationship between the presence of fluorescence and the transparency of a diamond.

For its part, the HRD study concludes, that even the presence of a high level of fluorescence does not negatively impact the appearance of a diamond. In fact, the study’s results point in the opposite direction i.e. that under normal lighting conditions and even in broad day light, the presence of a high level of fluorescence has a positive impact on the perceived colour of diamonds. HRD Antwerp even goes so far as to suggest that there should not be any price discrimination towards diamonds that exhibit fluorescence.

HOW DOES FLUORESCENCE IMPACT THE PRICE OF DIAMONDS

It is generally observed that diamonds which exhibit strong fluorescence are sold at a discount versus their equivalent with no fluorescence. Higher colour graded diamonds (D-H) with no fluorescence tend to be sold between 10% to 30% higher than similar stones with high blue fluorescence. At the other end of the spectrum, the lower colour graded diamonds (I-M) that have strong fluorescence, can be sold up to 5% higher than similar nonfluorescent stones.

Historical context

It is worth nothing that the current pricing dynamics did not always prevail. In fact, before the advent of modern diamond classification techniques, the colour “blue white” was particularly prized amongst diamond collectors. More often than not, these so called “blue white” diamonds usually exhibited very strong blue fluorescence which gave the stones a particularly appealing “icy” effect. This phenomenon probably explains why in various blind tests, consumers tend to prefer the appearance of diamonds displaying strong fluorescence. To that effect, the giant Russian miner Alrosa, decided to launch a diamond jewelry line composed exclusively of fluorescent diamonds – Luminous Diamonds. Based on the compagnies internal studies, young consumers are particularly attracted to these diamonds which glow in night clubs, concert halls and even under UV sunrays.

MYTH VERSUS REALITY

The presence of fluorescence confirms that the diamond is of natural origin

No, the presence or absence of fluorescence is not sufficient to confirm if a diamond is of natural origin or not. Certain natural diamonds do not exhibit their fluorescence under traditional UV diamond grading lights used by gemologist. It is also possible that certain synthetic diamonds (also called man made and/or laboratory-grown) as well cubic zirconium (CZ) can exhibit fluorescence.

A fluorescent diamond is less brilliant

No, the brilliancy of a diamond is primarily a function of how well it is cut. It is the optimal arrangement and symmetry of the various facets of a diamond that will determine the sparkle and fire.

A fluorescent diamond is less durable

No, fluorescence has no effect on the solidity or the internal structure of a diamond.

Fluorescence is a classification factor like colour, cut or clarity

No, fluorescence is a characteristic used to identify diamonds and NOT a classification element like colour, cut, clarity or carat.

A diamond displaying strong fluorescence is a bad thing

No, not necessarily. Certain studies even tend to demonstrate that fluorescence can be an attractive attribute that is sought after by some consumers.

SHOULD ONE BUY A FLUORESCENT DIAMOND

Fluorescence is an important factor to consider when purchasing a diamond. Regardless, of the results of the GIA and HRD studies, as a diamond dealer with over 20 years of experience in the field, I have often noticed that fluorescence can have a negative impact on the appearance of certain stones. Even if the “milky” effect is not systematically present, our expertise enables us to detect any unwanted reflection that might have an adverse impact on the value of your investment. A “cloudy” effect can also be present in diamonds that does not display fluorescence. This may be the result of a particular type of inclusion that impacts the crystalline network of the stone. As with most important purchases, best is to have the assistance of an expert and be able to inspect the stone before making a purchase decision.

Buying a Canadian Diamond in Montreal

Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires is a reliable source to provide you with rigorous information and a large selection of Canadians Diamonds which meets your criteria’s and budget.

Why purchase a Canadian Diamond?

Canadian Diamonds are sought throughout the world for numerous reasons including the fact that they are mined using sustainable development practices and the highest environmental standards. The Canadian Diamond Industry also bring numerous benefits to aboriginal communities and fosters economic prosperity in the regions in which they operate. The production of Canadian Diamonds also meets the standards set forth by the Kimberley Process in order to mitigate the distribution of “Conflict Diamonds”.

For the moment, three Canadian provinces have operating mines on their territory: the Renard diamond mine in Quebec, the Victor mine in Ontario and the Diavik, Ekati, Snap Lake, Jericho and Gahcho Que mines in the North-West Territories.

All the certified Canadian Diamonds sold by Laferriere & Brixi come with a certificate of origin which will specify the weight, the mine of origin and the identification number of the diamond. In most cases, the identification number, will be laser inscribed on the girdle of the polished diamond.

Also, please note that as company policy, all the pavé diamonds (smaller stones) used in the manufacturing of all our jewelry mountings are of Canadian origin whether if the center stone is of Canadian origin or not. Furthermore, all our jewelry is designed and hand-made by artisans here locally in Montreal.

Buying a Canadian is Eco-responsible

By opposition to purchasing a Laboratory-Grown (synthetic) diamonds, which are energy intensive to produce and have no resell value (learn more here), Canadian diamonds are an eco-friendlier alternative. A certified Canadian diamond is a store of wealth which will preserve value over time even in troubled economic periods. It is therefore important to keep all your documents including your certificate of origin in case you might wish to resell your items in the future.

Do Canadian diamonds cost more?

Diamond prices, whether they are of Canadian origin or not, are driven by the assessment of 4 main standards often called the 4C’s: cut, colour, clarity and weight. While diamond dealers will often consider many other factors, it is a simple methodology for consumers to follow and understand. The origin the diamond is not a factor that is considered to establish the price of a diamond. A Canadian diamond is sometimes more expensive because the cost of extraction and labor standards are higher in Canada than in other regions of the world. It is also more expensive to cut and polish a rough stone in Canada than to have the stone manufactured in India for example. Retailers also have different pricing policies and margins that will ultimately drive the final price for a consumer.

If you would like to purchase a Canadian for patriotic reasons, out of consciousness for the environmental or because you wish to be insured of its traceability, Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires will be able to provide you with the information you need and a large inventory of Canadian Certified Diamonds.

Laferriere & Brixi is also an important buyer of Canadian Diamonds in the secondary market.

Why Buying Laboratory-Grown (Synthetic) Diamonds is Such a BAD Investment

Many jewelers are peddling the so-called virtues of laboratory-grown (synthetic) diamonds but are they telling their customers the whole truth about them. Before you go out spending significant dollars towards the purchase of a laboratory-grown (synthetic) diamond, please take a moment and consider the following facts:

1. They have NO resale value.

Unlike natural diamonds which holds value over time, laboratory-grown diamonds are industrial products that are factory produced in matters of weeks. Since they are not rare and easily mass produced, there is NO secondary market for them. All the Diamond Bourses in the world have banned their members from trading them.

2. Retail prices are dropping FAST.

Chances are, you are already paying too much for your laboratory-grown diamond (LGD). Retail prices continue to erode fast as the cost of production declines. In fact, the production cost of LGD’s have decline 90% over the past 10 years while wholesale prices have dropped threefold over the past 2 years alone. The current retail prices place LGD’s at about 50% to 70% of their natural counterparts

To support this trend, in 2017, the retail price of a 1 carat, G, VS-clarity synthetic diamond was 65% that of a polished natural diamond with the same attributes. That number slid to 50% of the equivalent polished in 2018 and 2019, and to 35% in 2020 according to the latest industry study published by Bain & Company.

It is predicted that LGD’s should stabilize at about 10% of natural prices in the next few years.

3. They are BAD for the environment.

Manufacturing plants of LGD’s can cover several football fields with thousands of ovens requiring massive amounts of energy to produce them. It is estimated that carbon emissions of laboratory-grown diamonds are 3 times more than natural diamonds. While 83% of the water used in modern diamond mining is recycled and require little to no chemicals, LDG’s require significant amount of freshwater to manufacture.

4. They are FAKE.

Laboratory-grown diamonds have the same physical and chemical characteristics as natural diamonds, but they are NOT identical, and can be EASILY detected. LGD’s are crystals created in a laboratory using technology originally developed by General Electric in the 1950’s. The two common methods are called CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposit) and HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature). They’re also know as lab grown, lab created, engineered, cultured, or synthetic diamonds.

Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires Inc. is a strong advocate for natural diamonds and only sells natural untreated diamonds to both its retail and wholesale clients. Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires Inc. has a complete and advanced gemological laboratory which uses the latest instruments in order to identify both synthetic and treated diamonds.

Montreal based Diamond Dealer, Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires Inc., has recently acquired what industry insiders believe to be the largest single rough diamond purchased in Quebec in recent years. Weighing in at over 11.38 carat, this exceptional rough stone was acquired at auction directly from behemoth global miner DeBeers.

“Extraordinary diamonds of this size and quality don’t come to market very often” says Louis-Alexandre Laferriere the proud owner of the stone. In fact, it’s estimated that the occurrence of mining a diamond of this size is less than 0.005% or 1 in 20,000.

“This particular ethically mined rough diamond from Botswana, really caught our eye. The colour was absolutely outstanding and our careful analysis lead us to believe that it had the potential to yield one very important and beautiful single polished diamond.”

Laferriere & Brixi Diamant Brut / Rough Diamond 11.38ct Botswana, 2019

These large and exceptional stones are only sold via auction to a select group of international diamond dealers. “Only the top diamantaires get invited, so bidding is always extremely competitive” says M. Laferriere and “while you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity of acquiring one of these treasures, the risks are also very high from both a costing and production perspective.”

“In and out of itself, the rough has no value. It’s only the final polished stone you can derive from it that counts.” says M. Laferriere. “Your estimate in terms of the final weight, colour, clarity and cut needs to be extremely precise or else you will lose money.”

Although Laferriere & Brixi uses the latest gemological instruments to assist them in their decision making “nothing can replace human judgment, experience and intuition in these matters.” says the diamond expert. “It helps that we’ve had the good fortune of having bought and appraised thousands of diamonds over the past 15 years.”

With offices in Montreal, St-Lambert and New York, Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires Inc. is a Buyer & Seller of Larger Diamonds and Custom-Made Jewelry.

Journey of a Large Rough Diamond

Diamonds are rare and precious stones that mark the imagination on more than one level. But only a few knows the true epic that surrounds the majestic stone shining through at the bottom of its mount of gold or platinum.

Here is the wonderful odyssey, from mine to finger, of an exceptional rough diamond acquired by Laferrière & Brixi. From its discovery at the end of the world, to the jewel crafted with art and passion, while going behind the scenes, where an extraordinary expertise lies.

In the Heart of Botswana

Our diamond begins its story as it is discovered as a rough stone in the heart of one of Botswana’s three diamond mines, namely Damtshaa, Jwaneng and Letlhakane.

2,276 milligrams of carbon crystallized in metamorphic stone by billions of years of extreme pressure and heat up to a thousand degrees Celsius, hundreds of kilometers below the ground, then propelled to the surface over the ages by volcanic eruptions.

Larger than most diamonds usually drilled in these mines with 11.38 carats, the gem is sent for observation to the largest and most advanced diamond sorting center in the world. It is recognized as a “Specials” diamond by De Beers, the company that jointly owns the mine with the Botswana government.

While the smaller stones are sold in batches, the diamond is reserved to be sold individually by auction to select buyers.

Journey Around the World

The gem begins a journey round the globe to be exposed in De Beers’ various establishments. From Singapore to New York, through Hong Kong, Antwerp in Belgium, Tel Aviv and Mumbai, the rough stone is presented to a select group of diamond experts from around the world with the ambition to acquire it.

Louis-Alexandre Laferrière, among the invited buyers, flies to New York to examine the stone and determine its value according to the 4 main qualities of a diamond, commonly called the 4 C: the cut, carats, color and clarity.

Then begins the auction process to determine who will have the privilege of acquiring the jewel in the making. Once the auction has been won, the diamond is sent to its new owner, Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires, to initiate its valuation process.

In All Its Glory

Once the stone arrives at Laferrière and Brixi’s office, a new assessment stage begins. The question is now how to accurately determine how the rough diamond will be cut in order to extract the optimal shape while maintaining as much weight and clarity as possible.

Color

Although diamonds are most often imagined as brilliant stones without any color, they can actually exhibit differences in shades, between absolute transparency and off-white tints towards light brown.

They are graded on a color scale from “colourless” to “light color” thanks to a precise examination under a cold light, in order to discern the subtle color variations.

Some diamonds may have other special shades such as blue, green, yellow, orange, pink or red. These colored stones are classified as “coloured fancy”.

In this case, the examination revealed a beautiful whiteness, which constitutes a sought-after quality in colorless diamonds.

Carats

One of the first decisions the diamond dealer and tailor make, is how many diamonds will be crafted from the rough stone to keep the maximum weight possible.

Indeed, contrary to popular belief, carats refer to the weight of the diamond, not its size. 1 carat equals 200 mg or 5 carats for 1 gram. Large (and therefore heavier) diamonds are rarer than small diamonds, which is why a single large diamond is worth more than its weight in smaller diamonds.

By carefully examining our stone using sophisticated software, Louis-Alexandre and his tailor come to the conclusion that the best way to optimize the diamond and reduce losses is to make two pieces out of it.

The 11.38 carat gem is therefore cut to obtain a high clarity diamond of 6.01 carats and a smaller one of 1.04 carats with more inclusions.

Cut

Only element of the 4 C influenced by the human hand, the cut is actually what exerts the greatest influence on the brilliance of the diamond. The point is to qualify the quality of the multitude of facets of the diamond, as well as its ability to reflect the light intrinsically from one facet to another so as to project it towards the upper surface of the diamond.

The process of cutting or cleaving a diamond is a risky business because it has inner points of tension that could cause the stone to burst.

The decision to make two diamonds from the original gem is thus a risky bet that could be concluded in the loss of a portion of the diamond or all of it. Fortunately, the operation was a success thanks to the tailor’s mastery.

Once isolated, most of the diamond is cut into the “cushion” shape. This size, popular for over a century, has facets larger than many other popular cuts, so as to highlight the clarity of the diamond and its brilliance. The rectangular shape with rounded corners creates a beautiful harmony between geometry and softness for a look both modern and feminine.

The proportions of the multiple facets are meticulously calculated and cut with surgical precision to allow the diamond to shine brightly.

Clarity

When it comes to the clarity of a diamond, we are actually considering the degree of presence of inclusions. Inclusion is any solid, liquid or gaseous impurity that decreases the clarity of the diamond. They may be mineral veins, uncrystallized carbon or small visible fractures, more often seen with a magnifying glass or a microscope than the eye.

Since these impurities can influence the way the diamond reflects light, it is desirable to find the least possible, and smallest possible size, when examining the 10 times magnified diamond. The diamond receives a clarity code to signify how much inclusions it contains.

In its detailed evaluation, our diamond has revealed excellent clarity, so a small amount of inclusions, which gives it a magnificent shine.

A Highly Certified Diamond
The acquisition of a rough diamond, its transformation and its sale represent a process that few Canadian and Quebec diamond dealers master, among other things because of the administrative complexity that it represents in addition to the great expertise required.

Indeed, throughout the process of buying, processing and selling diamonds, certifications and associations are required to ensure their physical and ethical quality.

The American Gem Society
The diamond itself must undergo rigorous evaluation to obtain certification from the American Gem Society (AGS) or the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). These globally recognized laboratories have the authority to conduct a thorough assessment, make recommendations for the cut and issue an official diamond certification.

Indeed, a diamond classification report emitted by an independent laboratory provides an assurance of the objective characteristics of the gem for a fair evaluation of its value. The main objective of this process is the protection of consumers, who receive an unbiased opinion of the quality of the diamond they acquire.

A same diamond is sometimes sent several times to one or other of these institutions during the cutting phase. The recommendations made allow the diamond dealer and tailor to work the stone so as to give the final product an optimal quality.

Our diamond receives its certificate, an official document detailing all the gem’s attributes, its exact proportions through the 4 C and any additional observations deemed relevant by the American Gem Society.

Fair Trade Certified
Concerned about the global impact of the diamond industry, Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires subscribe to the Canadian Diamond Code of Conduct and the Kimberley Process, an international commitment underpinned by the UN mandate.

All diamonds purchased and sold by the expert, whether they come from Canada’s Far North, Botswana or other mines around the world, are therefore certified ethical.

Thus, the person who acquires a stone from Laferrière & Brixi is guaranteed that it is not a conflict diamond.

A Unique Jewel
This diamond draws a part of its singularity in the linearity of its course. Indeed, if few diamond dealers acquire and process special (large) rough diamonds, even fewer are those who continue the process until the creation of custom jewelry.

The gem in question here is one of those exceptions.

After being cut into a diamond of great quality, the gem is presented among an assortment of jewels to a person in search of an exceptional stone.

Once they have made their mind and chosen the diamond, the future owner shares with Louis-Alexandre their ideas and preferences for the ring that will be tailor-made for them and for the diamond that will set it. Inspired by these indications, designs and wax casts are produced to allow the client to visualize unique model proposals.

When the design of the jewel is final, the ring is cast in the metal alloy chosen by the client. In this case, the ring hosting the diamond is platinum.

The diamond is finally set in the unique jewel, the breathtaking final touch on another bespoke and fully customized creations that make Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires proud.

When it comes to selling, buying or transforming a stone as precious as a diamond, the expertise of a specialist is required. Laferrière & Brixi has specialized for over 15 years in the purchase and sale of exceptional diamonds. You are looking to buy or sell a diamond in your possession? Wait no longer.

But after visiting the bourse at the International Gem Tower just a few yards away down on 47nd street, one must admit that the new facility offers an amazing world class experience. “What first strikes you is the all glass exterior of the new building. It seems to blend in New York skyline as if it was invisible. The window patterns are organized in such a way to replicate thousands of gemstones.” says Alex Laferriere.

Diamond dealers and precious stone traders will appreciate the numerous safety features of the building. From the security guard presence to using the latest fingerprint and iris recognition technology, no detail was sparred. When combined with the additional security at the Club, one can trade stones in a peaceful and secured environment. The new trading floor will offer new modern facilities and the large surrounding windows provide a great lighting environment for trading.

We also comply with the Canadian Diamond Code of Conduct and insure that our suppliers source their diamonds from conflict-free zones.

Selling Your Diamond: 5 Things You Should Know

The very first step when selling your diamond jewelry is to understand what you have in hand. Diamonds are appraised based on the 4C’s: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Since this grading system is very well documented over the internet, a person in possession of a diamond classification report can easily find the information.

However, the issue is that diamond grading norms can vary widely, and that for various reasons:

1-The source of the evaluation

Grading norms, although determined by commonly accepted criterias, remain subjective. This is why the credibility of the grading source is extremely important when selling a diamond.

Amongst the most reliable sources, a classification report from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or the AGS (American Gem Society) are generally highly regarded. A serious diamond buyer will nevertheless take the time to do their own inspection and grading to confirm or establish the diamonds 4Cs.

2- Additional criteria

The diamond jewelry buyer will consider other specific criterias that do not necessarily appear on the grading or appraisal report. For instance, in addition to the cut, color, clarity and carat weight, the buyer’s evaluation may take into account the impact of fluorescence on the appearance of the diamond, the type and exact positioning of all the inclusions, or whether the stone was appraised set or loose.

The price offered for the same stone may therefore vary from one buyer to another in a diamond sales process, since each buyer may evaluate it differently and assign a different level of importance to some characteristics over others..

3- Appraisal for insurance purpose

It is possible, when selling your diamond, to be surprised by a lower offer than the stated value on the Appraisal Report. Differences may be driven by the fact that some retailers have a tendency to overstate the actual market value of diamond jewelry. It’s also possible to find, after careful inspection, that the diamond’s characteristics don’t match that of the Appraisal Report. Market conditions and demand for a specific type of diamond might also have changed.

4- The industry

Changes in the industry can also affect the value of your diamond. Market demand for a certain type of diamond, can increase or decrease over time and affect it’s the price. The diamonds specific form or cut quality can also potentially have an impact on the current value of your diamond.

When wishing to sell your diamond at the best possible price, best to consult with an expert that has an intimate knowledge of the current state of the diamond and jewelry industry.

5- Wear and tear

Your diamond may have signs of wear and tear or have suffered damages since it was first appraised. This often happens when the jewelry is old and was worn for a long time. The diamond buyer will also have to take into account any imperfections to be repaired and/or the associated cost of repolishing or recutting.

In short, a credible and experienced diamond jewelry buyer, such as Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires, will take the time to examine your diamond in person and explain his decision process. In addition to the characteristics provided in your diamond’s classification report, purchase offers are based on many additional factors. You can consult the experts at Laferriere & Brixi Diamantaires to help uncover any characterics that might contribute to the selling price of your diamond jewellery.

Precious Tips for Remodeling Old Jewelry

Remodeling jewelry is a simple solution that enables you to give new life to old jewelry pieces. Do not let your precious items sit in your jewelry box, turn them into something you will want to wear every day! Remodeling can take several forms: if you have a strong emotional attachment to it, your jewelry piece can simply be restored. That way, we keep part of the structure and incorporate it into a new piece of jewelry but with a different vocation; a brooch can become a beautiful pendant or a ring for example.

If the jewel does not correspond to your taste, we can remove the stones and redesign a new model altogether. We can create one or several pieces that meet your desire while utilizing your existing diamonds or precious stones. The metal can also be reused and recycled which reduces waste and the overall environmental impact. Using sophisticated 3D modelling software, Laferrière & Brixi Diamantaires will be able to assist and guide you through all the steps of custom manufacturing. For more information on our unique bespoke jewelry process, please consult our website at the following link www.lbdiamantaires.com/en/section/high-end-custom-jewelry/

If restoring or remodeling is not for you, it is also possible to sell us your diamond jewelry. With over 20 years of experience in buying & selling jewelry and using the latest gemological tools, we can provide you with the right diamond expertise to properly determine and maximize the selling price of your jewelry. You can make an appointment at one of our two highly secured buying offices in the Montreal region. We are interested in buying all kinds of antique jewelry, old European cut diamond, very large or chipped diamonds of any color with or without any certification.
